Gippsland House
A magnificent piece of farmland waiting for a small footprint, gently undulating home to nestle within it. Building a house can be a long journey. This one has had its twists and turns. Beginning with ideas of hay bale construction, it is now as a combination of heavily insulated framed walls and masonry elements for thermal mass and as a robust buffer to the climate that can be punishing. COVID and construction prices have slowed this little home down, but we hope to see it emerging soon!
The undulating hills were the starting point for the design - an overhanging roof that steps and folds to follow the contours of the land.
Scroll down for model shots of the house designed with generous roof overhangs all around to protect the walls from punishing weather and provide summer shade.
It’s a house designed to suit the weather. Deep shelter at the entrance with a mud room airlock to maintain the temperature inside, prevent blustery easterlies impacting the tranquil spaces inside.
A high ceilinged living space is the link between two lower volumes. Blockwork blade walls soak up the winter sun and create warm spaces to sit sheltered from the westerlies. Overhangs and deciduous planting keep the house cool in summer.
